If you'll be taking the bus to explore the Amalfi Coast or further afield, there's a choice of how to get the SITA line timetables - either by place 'visited'...

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/OrariCampaniaIndice

... or by route:

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/OrariCampania

Once downloaded they all be zoomed in on with Adobe Reader to make them more legible - and these are the words and phrases behind the codes you'll see used most often:

G = GIORNALIERA / DAILY

... Each and every day

F = CORSE FERIALI / WORKING DAYS

.... Every day except Sundays, unless a public holiday

L = SOLO FERIALI. LUNEDI - VENERDI

... From Monday to Friday, unless a public holiday

H = FESTIVA / SUNDAY AND HOLIDAYS

... On Sundays and on public holidays

S = SCOLASTICA / SCHOOL DAYS

... During term time (but not sure what happens if also a public holiday?)

N = NON SCOLASTICO / NO SCHOOL DAYS

... Out of term time (but not sure what happens if also a public holiday?)

(With both the working week and school week here normally running from Monday to Saturday!)

LUNEDI - Monday

MARTEDI - Tuesday

MERCOLEDI - Wednesday

GIOVEDI - Thursday

VENERDI - Friday

SABATO - Saturday

DOMENICA - Sunday

A few others:

PRIMAVERA - spring

ESTATE - summer

AUTUNNO - autumn

INVERNO - winter

ORARI - timetables

TARIFFE - fares

DA - from

PER - either for or to

SI EFFETTUA DAL.... A.... / Runs from.. until...

SI EFFETTUA IN GUIGNO E LUGLIO / Runs in June and July

TERMINA A.... / Terminates at....

CORSE SOLO... / Runs only...

Most place names are the same, but with NAPOLI being Naples!

Peter

PS: For those who've not visited for a while, in recent years services have been reduced on routes such as:

AMALFI - VIETRI (Tramonti) - POMPEI - NAPOLI

... and appear to have ended completely on:

NAPOLI - SORRENTO - POSITANO - AMALFI

Clearly it was getting TOO easy... so they've given everything a shake-up!

The SITA group has divided into 'BusItalia Nord' and 'SITA Sud'.... and the place to look for timetables would now seem to be their new webpage, here....

http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/

So, for example, schedule 5071 is the one formerly labelled as QXIV...

http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/public/tpl/campania/5071.pdf

... whilst 5070 has the old Amalfi/Sorrento part of QXV...

http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/public/tpl/campania/5070.pdf

Some of those are rather scrappy, but perhaps the Spring versions will be clearer?

Just to note that the first updates since the change are now beginning to appear - ONLY on the new website, it would seem...

This one's for the AMALFI - POSITANO - SORRENTO route, and takes effect next Monday.... April 2nd:

Two others that look new:

Wow, Peter, this is extremely helpful!

I notice that between Amalfi & Sorrento there are 3 routes, via Meta (1:30), via Massa L. (1:55) & via Nasto V. (1:40). They have different schedules, frequencies & somewhat different towns that they stop in. They seem to all stop in Positano.

Other than the frequencies & length of time is there one route that is better than the others? Will the route be clearly marked on the bus so we can know which bus we're getting on?

Not sure what defines "better" but you can perhaps trace the path of those three routes using this....

http://www.unicocampania.it/files/mappe/costiera.pdf

It's a little confusing, but they actually go THROUGH Meta, THROUGH Massa Lubrense or along the VIA Nastro Verde.... one meaning too many of "via"!!!!!!

And the point of having the three is presumably to provide public transport to residents of the various villages around Sorrento? As you'll have seen, they converge again only a few miles after leaving the town - onto the one and only road to Positano.

Many SITA buses have scrolling destination boards, as these do...

http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/128061635

If in doubt, ask the driver... but, unless you need to board or get off in any of those Sorrento "suburbs", then it's not going to matter very much?

Thanks for the additional info Peter :-)

By better, I meant does one offer better views or more worthwhile stops?

Can't tell you for sure, I'm afraid - as we've only done the trip by sea!

But, with the choice and the time, I'd try to do the Massa Lubrense route...

Friends of ours stayed in Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi and said the views were wonderful - and as far as I know it's one of few places from where you can see both of the "Due Golfi".... Two Bays .... those of Salerno and Naples?

Not sure how much you'd see from the SITA bus whilst it goes through there, so it might be worth taking a separate trip?

There's a timetable here:

From Sorrento - the Massa Lubrense buses go along the coast road from Sorrento to Massa before crossing over to the Amalfi Coast. The Meta bus will show you the towns adjoining Sorrento before it heads in to the hills and across the Peninsula. The Nastro Verde bus goes from Sorrento into the hills behind Sorrento on its way to Sant'Agata. All offer great views over the Bay of Naples. Perhaps pick and mix?

Only one bus a day betweeen Sorrento and Amalfi goes via Massa Lubrensa. The two routes from Sorrento are west via the Capo and Sant'Agata, and east via Meta. Certainly you get a good view of both sides of the peninsula from Sant'Agata but whether it's worth waiting for a bus via that route is doubtful. The main problem at busy periods is getting a seat on the bus if you don't get on at Sorrento station. At least there's a queue there - getting on at Amalfi is a free for all, it's full and standing, and then they still try and pick up en route.
