Train or Hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento

We're heading to Sorrento next week and I am just wondering whether we should catch the train or the hydrofoil...any suggestions?

I know the hydrofoil doesn't run as often as the train and I can see from the Alilauro website that a hydrofoil leaves at 3:05pm for Sorrento. We arrive at Naples train station at 2:20pm. Is this enough time to make the hydrofoil?

With or without luggage is perhaps the question?

Personally, for relocating to Sorrento etc, I'd take the train - things should be quiet around then - and maybe save the sea trip for when coming back to explore the city unencumbered.... although it's very pleasant, wherever:

See the "By train thru' Naples to Sorrento or Pompei...2012" entry in the "Top Questions" list for a little guidance, if required?

But as long as you arrive more or less on time, if you prefer, you should easily catch the 3:05 with a cab from the station rank...

Expect to pay 11-13 Euro for that...

... then 11 Euro each for tickets, plus €2 per suitcase and then a taxi or this €1 bus up to the town in Sorrento:

Some forty Euro for two - as against €4 each on the train?

The port is not walking distance from the train station. You would have to take the Alibus there, or a taxi.

If you take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, you buy a ticket on the main level of the Naples train station and then board the train in the basement.

With the smaller Mergellina harbour in Naples open once more (for crossings to Ischia only, not Capri or Sorrento), Alilauro have gone back to issuing a timetable for their various hydrofoil services.

Look for the Adobe symbol, and a link that starts, "Orari del Golfo di Napoli dal...." here:

www.alilauro.it/index.php?lingua=english

The version available today - valid from earlier in the week, and until itself replaced - is missing details for the Ischia / Capri and Sorrento / Ischia routes, for which see:
