The earliest train (Circumvesviana) from Sorrento to Naples is 6am and the route takes one hour.

You could be in Rome before 9am, timetable for Trenitalia

I can get you to Roma Termini at 7:20 a.m.:

1. Take the Circumvesuviana SUBSTITUTE BUS from Sorrento at 4:30 a.m., arriving Naples Piazza Garibaldi at 5:45 a.m. NOTE: No service on Sundays

2. Take the Trenitalia Frecciarossa train from Napoli Centrale at 6:10, arriving Roma Termini at 7:20 a.m. NOTE: This early train does not run on Saturdays or Sundays.

The EARLIEST train is the unreserved regionale train from Napoli Centrale at 4:02 a.m. You would need a private transfer from Sorrento to connect to this train.

The earliest USEFUL departure is the Frecciarossa train at 7:00 a.m., arriving at Roma Termini at 8:10 a.m.

(There is also an Intercity train departure at 6:00 a.m., but it also arrives at Roma Termini at 8:10 a.m. (it costs half of the Frecciarossa train at the BASE fare, and takes twice as long)).

I would plan to take the 7 a.m. Frecciarossa train. You would need to take the Circumvesuviana substitute BUS from Sorrento at 4:30 a.m. in order to connect to this train. You get off the bus (at 5:45 a.m.) close to Piazza Garibaldi (on Via G. Ferraris), then WALK to the train station (allow 10 minutes). The drop off point near the station in Naples is rather ugly, so be prepared.

6. Re: Fastest Train Travel Options from Sorrento to Rome?

There appears to be a second SUBSTITUTE BUS from Sorrento at 4:50 a.m., arriving Naples Via G. Ferraris at 6:05 a.m., which may be slightly more appealing than the earlier bus at 4:30 a.m.

I recommend that you VERIFY these substitute bus services locally in Sorrento the day prior to your trip. Ask at the Circumvesuviana ticket office at the Sorrento train station. Ask about the precise departure location of the bus (probably in the area in front of the station), and whether you can purchase the bus ticket from the driver (or from the ticket office the day beforehand).

If you have to catch a bus leaving at 4:30 am....then the obvious question is "Why stay in Sorrento at all". Sorrento is a nice place, but a 4:30 am departure time really doesn't even make sense.

If anyone has been following this; we found a bus service almost direct from Sorrento to Rome that leaves at 6:00 in the morning and arrives at 9:30. The cost was 36 euros per person. The ride was excellent and stress free. We left from the Sorrento train station. The tickets have to be advanced purchased on-line with a credit card. The arrangement is through Circumvesviana. Check the Circumvesviana bus schedule for the Sorrento to Roma schedule.

Thanks for this information. I was looking at taking a private car to the Naples train station and then train to Rome for six people. The bus actually will cost less and be less hassle.

Brrliner - I have two questions?

Is the Circumvesviana bus the same as the Marozzi bus?

How did you book your tickets? When I went on the Circumvesviana website it was only in Italian.

Thanks
