3 days in Sorrento

We will be in Sorrento in August for 4 days before taking the train to Rome. We would quite like to visit Pompeii, and go out to Capri and have read that you can go up to the crater at Vesuvius (although I don't know anything else about how to do it etc). Any other suggestions on what we can do? Any information you have on any of the above would be hugely appreciated!!

Thanks!

Here are a couple of guides to give you some ideas. The first is the official one and the second is a commercial one but it also has some useful info.

If you want to go to Vesuvius why don't you incorporate it with a trip to Herculaneum? You take the train to Ercolano Scavi and outside the station is the office which organises trips to Vesuvius and where you will pick up the jeep with other visitors. The driver will drop you off at the Vesuvius car park and tell you when to meet back at the car park for the return journey to the station. You can then walk directly to Herculaneum - literally a few mins.

Capri is lovely for a visit. Also a trip to Amalfi.

We used that service to do the Vesuvius walk in 2011 and regretted it. People from the previous busload were RUNNING downhill for fear of not being back in time, which made no sense to us since we knew more groups would be along and we presumed we could take a later shuttle.

Not so.

The driver brought a smaller van for the next trip and refused to take us. We ended up paying a huge sum to get back down the mountain. Meanwhile, the EAV bus passed us, nearly empty.

Next time, I'll go with the EAV bus, which picks up in the square outside the central train station and sticks to a definite schedule.

We had 4 nights/3 days a few weeks ago. Day 1 - Pompeii...Day 2 Amalfi Coast and Ravello (using SITA buses)...Day 3 - Capri. We loved them all, and the order in which we did them. But things might be more hectic - and definitely hotter - in August than April, no?

sad to hear you had a bad experience with them.

we also used the service next to the ercolano scavi station and for us, it was ok. I think we had an hour to get to the top and back witch was enough for us. i must admit we are young adults so the climb and downhill didnt took very long for us.

For your 3 days i would advice

- pompeii

- herculaneum & vesuvius

- full day capri

we also did it that way and enjoyed it for 100% :)

Hi everyone - thank you so much for all your posts! A lot of information to work through!!

We have so far settled on a full day on Capri (it just looks GORGEOUS!!)

We are also looking at going to Positano or somewhere - playaguya how did you find the buses? How long did it take etc?

Calabresa - the EAV bus you mention - does this leave from the Pompeii area? We were only planning on going to Pompeii rather than Herculaneum.......

Thanks!

The SITA bus stop is right across the street from the train station. There is a ticket office there too. Frequent service, and the trip to Positano takes a bit under an hour, if I remember correctly. You might want to purchase a day pass if you plan on seeing more than just Positano...You also might want to queue up a bit before the scheduled departure time so you increase your chances of a good seat...For the best views, you want to be on the right side of th bus.
