Upcoming 2-week trip to Italy kicks off with 3 nights in Sorrento (arriving via Naples Fri 26 July / on to Rome Mon a.m. 29 July).
I'm trying to figure out the best plan on that weekend -- using public transport -- to visit Pompeii and Paestum, leaving time to quickly visit towns along/near the coast (e.g. Positano, Amalfi or Ravello?) as well.
I was thinking of taking the early Sat train to Paestum via Pompeii (dep. Pompei F.S. 9am arr. Paestum 9:59am) and spending the rest of the a.m./early afternoon visiting the temples and museum there.
Among return options, the following appear to be possibilities:
1. Reverse route on the train, catching 14:06 from Paestum arriving Pompei F.S. 15:00. Then take a taxi to Pompeii ruins and see them for 3-4 hours since open til 19:30 in summer, then return to Sorrento.
2. After lunch in Paestum, catch SITA bus to Salerno and if possible/feasible, a ferry or hydrofoil making a stop (or stops) back up the coast, either ending in Sorrento in the evening (or catching a bus to there from the appropriate ferry stop, e.g. Amalfi, Positano?)
If I did option 2, I would go to Pompeii Sun early a.m. (8:30 opening) to try to beat worst of crowds/heat, and possibly try to squeeze in Herculaneum afterwards as well.
(I am prepared to be flamed-broiled under the August sun wandering the ruins, having done Petra the same time last summer -- brutal but definitely worth it.)
Any advice/comments on the above would be greatly appreciated -- I'm having difficulty ascertaining which ferries or hydrofoils will be operating and what the schedules are...
Thanks in advance!
