Boat trips from Ischia

Hi, I've booked to go to Ischia for a week on the 27th July, we will be based in Forio. Are there any boat trips e.g. to the Amalfi coast that you can recommend?

Also, is Pompeii a realistic trip from the island? I am concerned it may be too hot in the day mid summer.

Any other trips/things to do you can recommend? We are a young couple in our mid 20s.

Thank you!

Good for you - it's a lovely part of the island!

Try this for an idea of what's involved with arranging your own outing to Pompei from here...

(If keen, give me a shout and I'll check for current - high season - timetables etc)

We've taken visiting friends over in August, and in truth their two kids found it somewhat easier going than we middle-aged did! But far from impossible, and no one capable of pacing themselves should have any great problems... though I feel sorry for the elderly coach parties one sees being frogmarched around!

For boat trips in general - including those to Pompei or the AC - have a look at the recent entries in this thread:

Generally they offer the chance to join at Forio.

Friends have done the one to Positano and Amalfi - and took an overnight bag for a stop in Amalfi, returning on the next afternoon's boat after having had a good look around! Not sure where they stayed but their hotel was able to fix somewhere for them quite easily... though it would help to go midweek?

That's not quite so easy nowadays, thanks to a reduced frequency - but one could perhaps go out on Thursday, and come back from Positano on the Friday... do ask though!

Another interesting choice might be the Pontine islands - Ponza and Ventotene - which are to the north of us, off the Lazio coast...

Depending on what you enjoy, you could probably make your own way to either of other two nearby choices - the pretty island of Procida (by ferry or hydrofoil) or the mainland town of Pozzuoli (ferries only) - by first taking the bus to one of our other ports...Casamicciola or Ischia Porto.

There are also daily hydrofoils to Capri each morning...

And, in conjunction with those, the Alicost line are now making it possible to continue on - using one of their vessels - to, and back from, the Amalfi Coast...

(That's the message they're trying to get across with the " * In coincidenza con Capri " item on their schedule)

Hope that's covered everything, otherwise do give me a shout!

Peter

Thank you for all this information Peter.

I will be staying in Ischia in Sept for three nights then heading to Amalfi. Is there an easy way of getting to Amalfi from Ischia?

There's a direct service in the afternoons, but it usually gets withdrawn around mid-September.

Otherwise, something like this should still be possible..

Thank you Peter. I was worried that the service would end sometime in mid-Sept but now I have alternatives. This is a great help. I am so looking forward to my vacation to such a beautiful part of the world

Lovely! A deliberate choice perhaps?

Only - weather permitting - that will be a big day here at the Ischia Ponte end of the island, and (a bit later) at Porto too, as it's the usual date for the huglely-popular Sant'Alessandro procession.....

If here on a daytrip, it would very probably be best to buy your ticket back before leaving the port!

And in case you've not already found it, you'll probably benefit from having a look at the August edition of this...
