Train schedules from Naples to Pompeii

We will be arriving to Naples by cruse ship and want to visit Pompeii. Have been told to take the train from Porta Nolana station to Pompeii Scavi but can not find a site that lists time and prices.

What is the name of the train that makes this connection and where can I find a site that lists times and prices?

Thanks for any help

www.eavcampania.it

Click on Napoli-Sorrento TRAINS

This is the UNRESERVED Circumvesuviana commuter train. One-way fare is 2.90 Euros. The train takes 36 minutes. Trains depart EVERY 30 MINUTES.

You could also take a BUS from the Port of Naples to Pompei. Here are the schedules. Note that there is no BUS service on Sundays:

www.sitasudtrasporti.it (click on Line 5001)

The BUS fare is the same: 2.90 Euros each way per person. The bus takes 35 minutes.

HINT: Take the BUS from the Port of Naples to Pompei Scavi. Otherwise, it's a very dreary and ugly walk to the Porta Nolana Circumvesuviana commuter station in Naples (circa 1.5 kilometers), and the trains can get extremely crowded with commuters. The TRICK is the FIND the departure point of the BUS. You probably will need to ASK once you get off the ship. It should not be far, but the dock area is confusing and chaotic, and you must dodge big rigs and cars approaching the ferries. ASK for the SITA bus going to Pompei Scavi. There is a ticket office next to the bus departure point.

The departure point for the bus is just near the ferry/hydrofoil ticket office for Capri - well it was when I was there in October. However, you're arriving late January and the schedule linked above is only valid up to the end of December 2013 so bear in mind it may change.

I would just take a taxi to Napoli Centrale station and follow the dark blue signs which say 'Circumvesuviana' which will lead you down stairs to the lower level area where there are lots of shops. Keep following the signs to the ticket office buy a ticket and then head down the stairs to the platform. It's easier than the walk to Porta Nolana and you'll save time. Being January, daylight hours are much shorter but the bonus is Pompeii will be quiet save for probably lots of school groups. Taxi from port to station is a fixed fare of 11 euro. Let the driver know this before you get in the cab and agree upon it. Don't be bluffed (they may try it on...but be persistent!).

I agree, the bus is more convinient option than the train.

Last august we took a SITA bus to Pompeii and a train to get back to Naples/ port. It was a mistake to take a train. The train station is much farther from the port than the Sita bus stop. You can simply walk to the SITA bus stop from the port terminal and it will take only 15 minutes. It is too far to walk to the train station. To get to the bus stop turn right from the port gates and walk on the pedestrian walk until you see the SITA buses on the right. You can buy two tickets at the morning for a return trip; they are valid on the bus and on the train (in case you decide to take a train). Do not forget to validate them before you board a bus or a train.
