There are beaches nearby e.g. at Bagnoli (see video on http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x123q1b_napoli-la-nuova-spiaggia-di-bagnoli-19-07-13_news), which you can reach by train (Ferrovia Cumana - same line as Pozzuoli) from Naples: http://www.ulixes.it/italiano/i_pg06fr12.html - also Lido Fusaro on the Circumflegrea.

But I would suggest combining your 2 interests by taking a boat trip to e.g. Procida or Ischia.

As for other boat trips, Naples is a major port: where do you want to go (and when)? For example, you can take a hydrofoil to Capri or ferry to Sorrento, and in summer, destinations along the Amalfi coast.

P.S. for metro to Bagnoli from e.g. Piazza Garibaldi see www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp…

There are beaches but not what I would call "good" ones. I guess it depends on the kinds of beaches you usually visit and/or how frequently you get to them; for those accustomed to large, sandy ones most of the Italian beaches will disappoint.

The suggestion of a boat trip to Ischia for a beach day is a good one.

The beach at Bacoli is stunning - it's about 3km long and sandy. There are also some nice little hidden sandy spots at Mergellina. Many people in Naples itself lie on the rocks around the bay and jump into the water during summer. I've done this - as well as swimming over on Procida which also has sandy beaches.
