pompeii or vesuvius?

we are a family of 6 mom and pop, kids, 9, 6, 3 and grandma) arriving in early june on a cruise stop. we have about 8 hours in naples. we are all fit and used to hiking and walking long distances.

I was thinking of either going to Pompeii or hiking up Vesuvius. I have heard good and bad things about both. which do think would be best taking into account

-time constraints

-interest

-ease getting there using public transportation

thank you

It's much easier to get to Pompei than Vesuvio using public transit. There is a bus that leaves just a third of a mile from the cruise port (the bus depot at Molo Immacolatella Vecchia is within the port area) which is easy and far more comfortable than the train to Pompei. The price is the same either way, in fact, you could take the bus one way and the train back if the bus timetable doesn't work for you.

Pompeii is totally cool and easier to get there. There is a lto to see in Pompeii. the ruins are a mile wide east to west.

Pompeii is a unique experience in terms of history and culture. Hiking up a mountain can be repeated elsewhere. OK you see volcanic activity. Depends on the interests. Also with family it might be easier to go to Pompeii.

Since you only have 8 hours I would agree with Pompeii as well as it would take additional transportation to get to Vesuvius.

hi.

aquick follow up question...

is it self evident that these buses leave from molo immac. and not somewhere else in Napoli?

is the 9 minute walk from the staz. maritime to there according to google maps reasonable?

thank you all again for you valuable help....

Yes, the time estimate is reasonable.

I'm not sure what your question is about it being self-evident. There is a SITA ticket office where you purchase your ticket and they will point out the bus to you, if that's what you're wondering about.

At the Pompei end, you can make a google map to show you the walk to the entrance of the ruins as well.

If you use these coordinates to make a google map you'll be near the bus stop in Pompei: 40.746814, 14.484195. If you go to street view you'll see the bus stop in front of Camping Spartacus.

When you get off the bus, turn around and walk back in the direction you came from on the bus to the corner of Via dei Villa dei Misteri. Turn right and follow Via dei Villa dei Misteri as it curves to the left. In just a moment you'll see the Porta Marina entrance on the right. The total distance from the bus stop to the entrance is only two-tenths of a mile.
