Naples & Pompeii

Hello there! My husband and I are travelling through Naples from Sorrento on 24/9/2014 and were hoping to see Pompaii and continue on to Rome later that day.

Would it be better to book a tour from Naples station (assuming there is somewhere to leave our cases) or is there a better alternative?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

If you are coming from Sorrento using the local train get off at Pompeii station, you can leave your luggage there and walk few minutes to site. Join an official guided group outside the Ticket Office, 10€ per person for group of ten. The return to Naples via local train , up stairs for train to Rome.

There is a left-luggage office at the Circumvesuviana Pompei Scavi/Villa Misteri stop (for a fee) or you can leave your things at the office at the ruins (I think this is free, but not sure how secure it is).

Thankyou!

How much time do you think would be appropriate to allocate for a tour?

Professionally led tours generally run about two hours, plus time on your own to explore afterwards.

Thank you!

If we wanted to see the Herculaneum also is that far away and how much time would we need to allow?

Herculenuem is located about halfway between Pompei and Naples, on the same Circumvesuviana train line that you take from Sorrento to Pompei.

From the Ercolano Scavi train station, you need to walk about one-third of a mile down Via IV Novembre to the entrance of the ruins. There is a new (within the last few years) entrance/ticket building where you can leave your things while visiting the site. This is a much smaller site than Pompei but I would still assume 1.5 - 2 hours to see it.

Afterwards you'd need to walk back to the station and take the train on to Naples.
