Pompeii visit

We now live in Crete (moved there from the UK a few years ago). I'm thinking of a visit to Pompeii and can get there fairly easily from Athens on April/May.

My plan is to spend 3 nights in a hotel in Pompei, which would give us two whole days. We would spend one day doing the ruins of Pompeii & the second day at Herculaneum &, if possible, Oplonti/Poppea's villa.

My question is whether this is do-able in two days, or if we'd need two days in Pompeii itself.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Only you can decide!

The Pompei site is some 164 acres in all, and the authorities there say 30% of it is visitable....

These people have clearly walked most of it:

The official website is only available in Italian at present:

http://www.pompeiisites.org/index.jsp?idProgetto=1

... but they've timed itineraries for Pompei - of 2 hrs, 1/2 day and the whole day...

http://www.pompeiisites.org/Sezione.jsp?titolo=Quanto+tempo+hai+a+disposizione%3F&idSezione=58

... conveniently with versions arranged for each of the 3 entrances... like this, the one for 2hrs:

http://www.pompeiisites.org/Sezione.jsp?titolo=Due+ore&idSezione=69

... and also some good maps, links at the end of the page here:

Perhaps also worth having these, of the town and its public transport, and of the site:

If buying tickets, the €20 2 day version might be a good idea - which will also get you into Boscoreale, but probably covers only 1 entrance to each site....

(or even the €27 3 day Artecard, 2 prepaid admissions, then reductions thereafter with use of local transport included, if you've not seen that?)

...........................................

Particularly if here over a weekend, there's a link to some great advice from another TA member who visited recently, start on:

...........................................

For Herculaneum, note the links to lists of buildings etc that are open (visitabili) and closed (non-visitabili), at the foot of this page

Listen very carefully, I shall post these better links only once:

Trust those will work a bit more easily - should go first to a preview page, then lead you to the right place on the Pompei website!

Thanks for all this!

I intend to do a lot of research before we go, just so I know what I'm looking at.

I just wanted to know if the proposed itinerary was do-able in two days so that I could think of flights & nights in Hotel etc. I think it is & I know we'll probably miss bits, but I didn't want to miss the best bits. I suppose if we miss too much, we can always go back !

Thanks again

Jackie
