Stopping by Herculaneum with Luggage

We will be visiting Italy this summer and one of our most anticipated destinations is Pompeii. So much so that we are staying two nights there so that we have one entire non-travel day to see as much of it as we can. We would also like to see Herculaneum, but aren't sure about how we would handle our luggage. We will be traveling from Rome by train, then transferring in Naples to the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. We'd like to hop off the train in route at Herculaneum to visit it as well before continuing on to Pompeii. However, we will have our two small carry-on size hard sided suitcases in tow.

Does anyone know if there is a location to store luggage at the Herculaneum train station that is secure?

Thank you for your reply. I visited the www.pompeiisites.org website but did not find any information regarding luggage storage, only a request not to bring luggage into the archaeological area. Can you please provide me with the link to the luggage storage information for Herculaneum?

You are not even allowed to carry a back pack into Herculaneum. As such they have very accessible storage facilities. If you are concerned buy a secure strap to lock around your luggage. It's incredibly easy.

Also, we had a guide (Silvia) and did Herculaneum, Paestum and Pompeii with her. She was fantastic. If you are interested in her services I would be happy to send you her email address, you will learn a lot more with a guide - at least we did. She is very passionate and interesting, and I dare say, she'd probably allow you to store your luggage in her car if you asked.

Her price was 50 Euros per hour, though this was a few years ago now so possibly more. We had a car but she was happy to pick us up and drive us from place to place. We actually decided to spread the three sites out across three days so we could soak everything in so ended up driving ourselves, but the offer was there.

Thank you for your reply. We have been looking at Google Street View, which provides views of the Herculaneum (Ercolano) station for the Circumvesuviana train, and also provides views INSIDE of Herculaneum!

The views of the station appear to indicate that it is only an outdoor platform, with no station building and no luggage lockers/storage.

The views of Herculaneum show a single very small, entrance gate building. It is not clear where luggage storage would occur, since the building is so small. Is the luggage storage inside the small, round entrance gate building?

No, you walk through that gate, down the sidewalk to the visitor's center/ticket office. That's where luggage storage is located.

There is no luggage storage at Ercolano station. The storage is at the site ticket office which is 500 metres down the road. You would need to walk that distance with your bags or take a cab (good luck with that, they don't like going such a short distance).

You're looking at the old entrance on Google maps.

The new entrance is beyond the old one at the end of Via IV Novembre, at the opposite end of the excavations. It's a large, square building. If you use these coordinates to make a google map, the green arrow will be where the building is and you can go into satellite or street mode to see the building itself: 40.804795,14.346877

From the Circumvesuviana Ercolano Scavi station to the new entrance of the ruins is one-half mile.
