Pompeii to sorrento via train

My husband and I will be traveling from Rome to Sorrento via train. Once we get the train in Naples to Pompeii, can we take the same train directly to Sorrento or will we have to go back to Naples to get the train to Sorrento?

Also, are the trains in Naples unsafe? I have heard they are and am a little nervous....

Thanks in advance

The Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento stops at Pompeii Scavi so you don't have to go back to Naples to continue to Sorrento. Look at the blue route on here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumvesuviana - coming from Naples, Pompeii Scavi (which is the stop next to the main, Porta Marina, entrance to the site), is after Torre Annunziata - Oplonti.

I wouldn't call it dangerous, but you need your wits about you - as on ANY public transport, in fact - especially if you would be travelling at commuting times when it is crowded. See groundedtravel.com/routes/rail/europe/naples…

The trains are safe: it is very unlikely that you would be attacked. However, as on any busy local train in Europe, you should be alert for the possibility of pickpockets and other petty thieves.

Yes. It is a suburban train, so there is no luggage rack. Stay with your luggage.

On the train from Rome to Naples (both Trenitalia and competitor ITALO Treno), there are dedicated spaces for luggage, including in front and above your seats. NOT SO on the unreserved Circumvesuviana commuter train between Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento. This means that you will need to keep your luggage right by your feet and always within your control. This may get a bit uncomfortable if you're standing on a moving commuter train. In particular, pay very careful attention to your valuables, including purse, wallet, backpack, electronic equipment, laptops cameras, tablets, smartphones, etc., which are often targets for pickpockets and professional thieves, who frequent the Circumvesuviana in search of tourists and others unfamiliar with this environment.

I don't want to exaggerate the risk of theft, but you do need to be very vigilant, especially not to be distracted by common tricks used to steal valuables. The thieves often work in pairs or small groups, and have finessed their modus operandi to the level of an art.

On the Circumvesuvaiana train there are compartments where the doors are located. There is sufficient room to store your bags there but you need to stay with the bags so you will need to stand. Read GAC's comments again they are accurate.

On our last day we realized that there is room under the seats for a flight carry on sized bag. Just lie them it down and push them under the seat. Much easier and secure than holding on to the bag in front of your seat.

There is also a very small overhead rack about big enough for a briefcase. Travelling on this train does teach one to travel light.

Just to whet your appetite here are images of Sorrento. You will have a great time.

The train to Pompeii is on the Naples to Sorrento trainline, so you can carry on to Sorrento.
