Half way hotel between Rome and Pompeii

Landing at Rome airport and renting a car, and need a suggestion for hotel/area to spend first night, as we will be jet lagged. Going on to Pompeii and then Sorrento.

they're really not much between Rome and Pompeii......the only thing of interest, if you were to stop might be the palace in Caserta.......it is modeled after Versailles and GORGEOUS.......but I would only stay there if you were going to see the palace.....if not, I would just bite the bullet and get yourself to Naples or even Sorrento (where you can use the circumvesuviana to backtrack to Pompeii the next day)...

TripAdvisor is famous for answering questions people didn't ask, but if you don't care about the intermediate destinations, this trip is ideal for rail only, and cheaper and less work. The Circumvesuviana is not as nice as the fast train from Rome, but it gets the job done. A car is indisputably a pain in the neck in Sorrento, and you can use the money saved to hire a car with driver for a day on the Amalfi Coast. See the search box over your post.

You might look in Castelgondolfo (spelling?), Frascatti, Montecompatri, etc. Small pleasant towns, but really need a GPS to find hotels there.

Just go straight to Sorrento and to Pompeii from there. It is a bit of a detour but the next day on your way to Pompeii drive down the beautifull coast. Also you will be settled with alot less hasle.

If you are driving straight to Sorrento, then you will have to research a hotel with parking. Sorrento can be a real 'nasty' to drive in. Narrow streets, one way streets, and ZTL's. It's also very slow going once you leave the autoroute. Don't know what time you arrive FCO, but I think you'll find it all a bit too much to do it. One idea has come to mind. If you drive south from FCO along the coast, it's very pleasant. Get as close to Naples as possible, but still on the coast. Gaeta comes to mind. Chill out on the beach. Then, next day, fully rested, make your trek into Sorrento.

Thanks to all. Looking into Gaeta as overnight. Trip Advisor is so helpful
