How cheaply to get to Rome from the port Civitavecchia?

I'll be going to Rome in June for 2 week cruise and I do not know how I can get from the FCO to the port and from the port in Civitavecchia to the center in Rome after my cruise? All the limo services and taxis are so-o-o-o expensive.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi travelgirlOH,

Go to www.cruisecritic.com and you will find a lot of info on cruises, etc. When you open the link, click open the "Boards" category at the top left, then scroll down to the "Roll Call" section, click that open, then look for your cruise line, your ship and date of sailing. Others will have posted there going on the same cruise and you may be able to share a ride to the port with others. It is expensive getting to the port on your own but you will not have many choices.

YOu might also contact some limo companies and get quotes for the trip. If there are only 2 of you, then it will be more expensive. You may get a little discount if you are booking 2 trips to and from the port.

Here is a list of limo companies that I have compiled also.

Here's a list of limos, etc. for transportation.

Travelgirl

The cost of a limousine is around 100 E or more, if you travel with several people you can divide the cost.

Another option and more cheaper is the train, there is a direct train between termini in Rome and Civitavecchia, there is a direct train between FCO and Termini and from there to the port.

Enjoy!!

We are going on a cruise too... When will you be there? We will be touring the Vatican on June 18, then going to the pier. Does that happen to be your day??? We are also looking for the best deal to get to the pier. I was thinking about the train, but I don't know how far the train station is from the pier or how easy it would be to get a taxi in Civitavecchia to the pier...

Thank you May - your info was very useful.

And Lisa - yes, my cruise will start on June 18 from Civitavecchia. I will be flying in to FCO on 17th , spend a night in the port (booked a hotel there) and then get on the Carnival Freedom on June 18th. I will have to get to the port on June 17 from the airport (me and my mom) and then after the cruise is over - June 30 - I will have to get to Rome's center to my hotel there, we are staying a few more days in Rome after the cruise. I was considering going on the train - much cheaper, but more hassle withe the luggage, but if I can meet some people like us to share a limo or big car to split the cost - that would be great.

Thank you all for the help!

And if someone is looking for a share on the shuttle - let me know!

Sincerely -

Travelgirl, have you considered staying in Rome the day you fly in rather than the port area? You could do some sightseeing in Rome that day and then coordinate a ride to the port with Lisa on the 18th. The only reason I am suggesting this is because people have said that there is nothing to do in the port and you could at least see some of the wonderful sights of Rome the day you arrive.

Just a thought......

As far as taking the train, I know that many people recommend this but if you have a lot of luggage for your cruise (and you are 2 women carrying this), then it might be difficult for you to travel this way. It is cheaper but might not be easier for you. You would need to walk 10-15 min. from the train station to the port.

Sharing a ride would probably be the best option. However, it's up to you. Good luck.

Travelgirl,

COOL!! Same cruise!! I can't wait. It's our first... so much to plan!!

IF you could change to another hotel in Rome, maybe we could share a vehicle to the port. There are 4 in my group, so we would have to get a mini-van. We are staying the night of the 17th at the Rome airport Hilton. It's way cheaper than downtown, and they have a free shuttle into town. We aren't planning to do very much on that Sunday, but we will have all day Monday.. and you do know that the Vatican is CLOSED on the 29th ... the day our ship will be docked there... ? We were soooooooo disappointed. That's why we are trying to arrange to see it on Mon. Of course, you are staying later, so you could go then.

We are planning to tour the Vatican the morn. of the 18th, see the excavations at 1:15, and be ready to head to the port by 3:00. Since we are cutting the time so close, we are really going to need to hire a private driver to pick us up at 3 ish and get us to the pier on time. My TA advised against us trying to make it there on the train in time.

If you are interested in sharing, I'll tell you the info. I've gotten so far. Feel free to e-mail me at lisagrasso@charter.net

Hi Lisa and all,

Thank you so much for your great advice and offer to share the ride. I think in my situation will be better if my mom and I will stay in port one night June 17 and early afternoon June 18 go straight to the ship. We will be coming to FCO on June 17 in the afternoon and by the time we get to the hotel it would be late afternoon and not much time to see any sights and with my mom (she is 65) I'm not sure she will be up for any sightseeing after the flight. We'll just take it easy. This cruise will be my second and my mom's first - we are very excited! I knew that Vatican will be closed on 29th (St. Peter and Paul's day) and booked a few more nights in Rome after the cruise - in hotel "Roma dei papi" right near Vatican, across from Castle St. Angelo. I wonder if other travelers who stayed there could give me some info about this hotel - reviews were good but not too many.

Lisa, looking forward to hear back from you - maybe we can meet on the new Carnival Freedom in June!

No problem!

You and your mom will be rested and know the layout of the ship early! We are staying in Rome Sunday night, doing the Vatican thing Monday morning, then taking the car we reserved to the pier... hoping to get there by 5PM!! Whew...... wish us luck! If you'd like to e-mail me, maybe we can set up a time to meet on the ship! lisagrasso@charter.net

Have fun planning!

Hi! If you don't have a ton of luggage and you are in fairly good shape, here is your cheapest route. The cruise ship will shuttle you to the entrance to the port for free. Then you get of the shuttle and turn right past the guard gate and wheel your luggage straight down the road for about ten minutes until you get to the train station on your left. Go in and buy tickets into Rome (4.50 euro per ticket). Validate your tickets in the little yellow machine on the wall and go through the gate to the trains. The guards will point you to your train. The trains run about every half hour or so and it takes about an hour to get to the Termini station in Rome (although you might not be going that far depending on where you are staying. it is a little more effort, but probably faster and much less expensive. Have a great trip!
