The most sleepless areas in Roma

Hello everyone!!

My boyfriend and I are delighted to be visiting Roma after 7 years, for a third, yet very short visit.

Unfortunately, so far we have only strolled around the historic centre and Trastevere where we were staying.

I would much appreciate any help in, maybe, choosing another location since Trastevere was a bit too crowded with us tourists for our liking 7 years back, though we had visited in June and not in the midst of winter!

We are looking for a location with vibrant nightlife on a Tuesday and Wednesday night, if that is possible, where we would listen mainly to the Italian language spoken around us :)

I have been checking the unknown areas like Monti - does it still have a village feel to ti? - , Aurelio, Testaccio, Pigneto, San Lorenzo and Garbatella. They all seem fantastic and unique!!

We are interested in both graffiti and archaeology and since we live in Athens, areas which are considered dodgy or dirty to others might be ok to us, unless, of course they are not safe for a stroll at night..

Any help would be very much appreciated, grazie mille!

Have a great Christmas!!

Anna

I take it you mean you WERE in Trastevere in June seven years ago, and will now be visiting Rome again "in the midst of winter".

Anyway I don't think anything much has changed in this respect since this response some years ago: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g18779…

If she is looking for places with no tourists, those recommendations are definitely not it...Campo de fiori is mainly a foreigners hang out. She would do better staying in Monti probably.

I wonder if by "unknown" you mean that you personally don't know it, but Monti is rather touristy indeed.

I think the best areas for what you're looking for are San Lorenzo and Pigneto.

Rione Monti (Via Urbana, Piazza della Suburra, Via Leonina) is a classic.

As already suggested, San Lorenzo is a place that matches what you are looking for. Also Basilica San Paolo surrounding area is very nice (there are some nice pubs and restaurants in Via Ostiense close to the Schuster Park, close to the Basilica), and I suggest to go there on wedneday, since it's extremly crowder for the aperitivo at El Chiringuito (Largo Riccardi).

Note that most people attending this forum are likely to know Trastevere and Monti much more than Garbatella, Pigneto or San Lorenzo, so you have to expect more votes for Trastevere and Monti. But if your goal is nightife with no touristyness I think that these two are not the best options.

N.B. as for Garbatella: I like it and I find it nicer than San Lorenzo or Pigneto, but probably less suitable for nightlife.

Dear Lupaling and Aristofane thank you very much for your help and the lovely photos!!

We stayed in adorable Trastevere the previous times and thought it'd be nice to experience another area in Roma.

I am hectic when it comes to planning my holidays and so have checked out many websites and travel blogs for Roma which is great though a bit confusing as Roma is a diversified and, clearly, an amazing capital.

After strolling hilly Lisbon for a week I might choose Monti in the end since it's too central and hence very convenient.

If it's any help to anyone, I have thoroughly checked out accommodation options at the areas of Monti, Testaccio, Pigneto, Garbatella, Trastevere and Aurelio in many websites and I think Aurelio and Monti feature the best value for money ratio, at least in winter time.

Thank you all very much!!

Have a great Christmas!

Greetings from Athens!
