One Night Stay In Beach Town

In August, my wife and I return from a cruise into Civitavecchia. We will arrive in the a.m. and do not fly out of Fiumicino until the afternoon of the following day. Can anyone recommend a good sandy beach and hotel to visit for our limited time? We are not opposed to driving for the right spot. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sabaudia (Le Dune Hotel) has a few hotels right on the beach. It's not an attractive town (Mussolini built in under a year) but the strip of beach is mostly undeveloped save these few hotels and they are on a gorgeous piece of beach. Otherwise, you may want to make the drive another 30 minutes south to Sperlonga, a charming, cliff of a town that's now a bit posh in places.

Another option that will be a little closer will be 2 hours minimum from Civitavecchia. August traffic along the roads can be congested.

For only one night this is a good distance to drive...there are two towns...Anzio (the bigger of the two) or Nettuno...very close as 2 miles difference..you could experience magic of a summer night and live entertainment...fantastic seafood (in particular anzio) and hire beach chairs/umbrellas. It isn't the most beautiful beach along the coastline of italy..however to have time to enjoy the afternoon you arrive, evening strolls and morning you depart as free time the further you go the more time you'll need to drive... From this part to the airport on a good run is around 1 hour with summer traffic it can slow down to up to 2 hours some days (in particular if weekend or around the 15th) as many of us escape rome for the seaside. On the beaches there are restaurants and snack bars and certainly enjoy a swim.

Well...

If you don't want traffic problem... just spend 1 beach day in Santa Severa to the hotel "Pino al Mare", Santa Severa is 15 Km from Civitavecchia.

And at the evening you can go to Santa Marinella port, or promenade.

If you want drive.... go to North, to Tuscany cost, in 1 Hour from Civitavecchia you can find very nice beach and sea.

Don't go to South to Anzio .... from Civitavecchia.... are 3 hours by car in august.

Civitavecchia is north of Rome so stay in that direction, DON'T head south. Your best bet is heading towards the Argentario (Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole).

Honestly, I drove through Civitavecchia, Porto Santo Stefano and Orbetello last week. No thanks! We stayed over night at a Hotel Villa Domizia in Porto St Stefano. A nice place, clean, comfortable, a great value for a 3 star hotel in that area. Overall, we found the area to be very disappointing. The beaches were not very nice and I found the area sort of seedy and dingy. We had hoped to stay in the area two night sbut left early the next day and stayed in Rome a day longer. We like the beach but we just did not find this area appealing. Frankly we drove through Civitavecchia, it is a pit.

We loved Rome, I would tell you to drive to the Rome Park Marriott, park your car and take the free shuttle serive into the city to go for dinner in the city that night. Go see the vatican all lit up or avoid the lines and pay for a tour the following morning. you'll have a better time.

TravelwithZ...it is good you added your post you hopefully can help re1362 further. It is a shame you didn't find 2 nights by the beach on your vacation but glad it could end nicely in Roma. Do consider writing a review on where you stayed in Porto St S.
