Taxi for Family of 5

I read one poster stating their family of 5 had to take 2 taxis to get somewhere???

Is this the norm? We were hoping the husband could sit up front while the four of us sit in the back...

We are staying at the Crowne Plaza St. Peters and were expecting to use taxis quite a bit...

Thank you for any info.

How would you get four in the back? The only place we could into one was London, where they have fold down seats. Obviously, there are some large people mover type taxis, but we found most were sedans, only taking four of us.

Trains are good everywhere and cheap (except London, where we found it cheaper for 5 to take a cab). Most places we walked and boy, did we walk!

Forgot to mention, taxis were on strike for a couple of the days that we were in Rome.

Just returned from Rome and had no problem at all with taxis for the five of us. Have your hotel call for you and ask for a taxi for 5. The meter starts when they are called versus going to a taxi stand. Found the fares to be very reasonable.

Have a wonderful trip!

You see, taxis are supposed to have a seat for every person and not just cram them in, but often they disregard this.

There are large mini-van type cabs that can easily hold a group. Many drivers of average sized cabs will take a group of 5, but often they will not budge on that. A good idea for families in that situation (if not take a bus) is to split one adult per cab. You can also call a cab and request one for 5 people (cinque gente). Cabs can come to addresses and even street corners, but they do charge extra for the pick up. If you have a cell phone there, ask the concierge for a few taxi call numbers and put them in your phone. Then, if you can't locate a cab, you can just call one.

Hello,

I was just reading about your hotel. It says it has an airport shuttle and also a bus to the city center. Take advantage of these services and save yourself the cab fare. Also, there is a metro stop about 1 km away.

You will be able to find larger cabs so I wouldn't worry too much about all of you getting in. You may have to wait a few minutes if you are at a taxi rank because they must go in order, but it will be worth it for you all to get there at the same time and not pay the extra cab fare.
