The feeling you get the first time you get on an Italian train and share a bottle of wine, or the first time you walk up to the Coliseum and say to yourself "I can't believe I'm here!!"

the little piazzas, with their quiet ambience

the gelato

the churches and how they are all free.

the Moses

the Scavi tour

the oldness

The Roman forum, and that it is also free - that i could stand where Caesar stood.... it is mindblowing.

The spirit and liveliness of the jewish ghetto and the beautiful synagogue with its stunning square dome

The markets with the red red red tomatoes and green green veggies, much more vivid than we get in the US even at farmers markets

and like candi, i like the challenge of proving there are beautiful and open-minded Americans, for sure. It was an absolutely special feeling for me when people came up to me speaking Italian! Rome was not my favorite city in Italy, but I still loved it nonetheless!!

The fact that it's one big open-air museum, and also a living breathing city.

The way the fountains and ruins get lit up at night.

All the untold fascinating little things you can discover in nooks and crannies of the back streets.

The way many Italians go out for a walk or go sit in the piazza socializing early in the evening.

Gelato, espresso, and pizza on virtually every block.

The cheap house wine (often 2 glasses worth for a mere 3-4 euros)

And as someone else mentioned in another thread....all those cute people on scooters!
