The way the Romans walk and talk, proud and loud!

Being greeted with a robust Buongiorno and Grazie!

Stray cats (nice to see they are cared for)

Unexplored side streets

Old doors, windows and shutters

Laundry hanging out to dry

Just to name a few...

We just returned from Rome a week ago today. The threads today have been interesting. Personally we adore Rome (2nd trip), lets just say with warts and all.

The people, food, energy and the living museum it is make it special.

It is a big city that like most big cities wherever they are have their plusses and minuses but the plusses sure dwarf the minuses.

Gelato (watermelon and coconut are my favorites)

Little churches you stumble across that contain amazing art

Huge churches that you walk into and immediately your mouth drops open and you walk around in a daze amongst the beauty

The darling old Dominican priest standing next to the book stall in Santa Maria sopra Minerva

The men who flirt with you as you walk by

Learning how to cross a street in Rome

Sitting at an outdoor table in a restaurant with a beer or pitcher of wine and simply watching life in Rome

Getting lost in the little back streets of Rome and finding fabulous little restaurants and churches

- Borromini!

- succulent deep fried zucchini blossoms stuffed w/formaggio & anchovy

- Via Appia Antica

- the friendly proprietor at Ar Galletto ("buoooonaaaaa seeeerrrrrrraaaaa")

- the congregation at San Francesco a Ripa, who allowed me to join in their service (when I, the art-history-loving non-Catholic, had truly gone there to see Bernini's beautiful statue, but would not dare interrupt the service, so I quietly sat in a pew). It was easy to follow along, as one need only listen to the cadence of the voices...and then we all turned to each other & shook each other's hands and said "Pace." Peace - a word to be learned in every language. One of my fondest memories of a great city, that has nothing to do with ridiculous expectations not being met...but rather, what we all share as people. SOUL.
