Trenitalia purchase seems impossible - can I buy in Italy

I've been trying to buy Eurostar train tickets for a Rome to Venice round trip in late January (Mon-Tues travel)on the Trenitalia web site. After literally dozens of tries, I now see that the amica fare appears to be unavailable. I already have a prepaid reservation in Venice for an overnight and flying is not an option. What can I expect if I buy after we arrive in Italy? Am I going to pay much higher if I can only purchase a 1-2 days in advance?

Don't worry about it. You'll pay the same price if you buy your tickets in Italy. And the trains rarely sell out.

We are a family of 5 - might there be any discounts other than standard fare at the station?

If you can manage to buy your tickets a day or more in advance, you can possibly get the Amica fare, which is a 20% discount. It's only available for reserved trains, such as the ES and IC Plus trains, and there is a limited number of Amica tickets available. Also, you have to request this fare, either by selecting it on the ticket machine or asking for it at the window.

If you are going short distances, you might consider taking the cheaper R and IR trains, which have no reservations and take longer, but are cheaper.
