Traveling with the ederly

I will be taking my mother to the vatican this year. She is so excited. She can walk slowly but is 75 and tires easily. Does anyone have any recommendations? Are the museums wheelchair accessible? I want to make this trip the best ever for her. Thanks, G

There is a wheelchair route in the Vatican, and they even have a few wheelchairs available, but I believe you have to call and reserve one. Also, do not wait in the long ticket line with the elderly, just go to the door and the guards will (usually) let you in. St. Peter's and many other sights also have wheelchair access, but they take some scouting out. Have a look at:

www.handyturismo.it

or

…roma.it/accacomune/osservatorio/Default.asp

(the 2 after the "www" is necessary)

and

www.vatican.va for info on reservations etc.

I would also bring binoculars for the Sistine since elderly sometimes have a problem bending backwards and seeing that far away. For my dad, who is arthritic, I brought a hand mirror so he could see the ceiling without looking up at all.
