Have a look at www.venere.com. Pick a hotel or other accomodation in the historic center or trastevere. You can choose by price and location.

Lucky boyfriend! Any of the neighborhoods where the major attractions are located will be nice and Rome is a very walkable city. You might want to look at a map, locate the things you most want to see and do, see where most are clustered, and look in that area.

Rome is very expensive for US$, but the Pound Sterling might be doing better against the Euro. Besides venere.com, RomeBy.com also lets you search by neighborhood and by budget. You can cross check the hotels for reviews at this website, Slow Travel web site (www.slowtrav.com), to get an idea of what's available.

How long do you plan to visit Bella Roma? If you've got a week, consider renting a self-catering apartment through www.vrbo.com or one of the other short term rental agencies. You'll get more space and the convenience of having a kitchen, perhaps for less than the cost of a hotel. You won't have a front desk to make reservations for you, but most apartment owners are happy to provide information about local restaurants and will often have recommendations for car services and other stuff you might need.

We like the Campo dei Fiori area (but wouldn't recommend staying right on the Campo itself, it's noisy) and recommend a small hotel nearby on via dei Pellgrini, Hotel Rinascimento.

We just returned from a 20 day med cruise and it was awesome.

After looking at lots of hotel options in Rome we decided to stay at Annes Place a B and B about 30 minutes from city center.

In addition to the great location in the beautiful Italian countryside our hosts Anne and David provided everything we could possibly need. Most importantly they picked us up at the airport, took us to the train to go into Rome, drove us to restaurants (that were half the price of Rome), and then finally took us to the port to board our ship.

The price for our comfortable room and a great breakfast was 75 Euro a nite and a very fair price for the airport and port transfer.

I highly recommend this as an alternative to staying in city center. They have a good web site.

We stayed at the Belle Suite Rome and would go back quite happily. I am extremely fussy and found it to be very clean, not expensive by Rome standards and we walked to all the major attractions. There is free internet and the breakfast was pretty good for Europe. We love to walk because it's the best way to really see things. If you look at a map, to give you some idea of location, if we walked briskly without stopping (almost impossible with all the distractions) from Belle Suite to Piazza Navona, we could do it in about half an hour. It's very close to Via Nazionale which is a major street with supermarket, cafes, shops and excellent public transport and easy walk to the train station. There are several other "hotels" in this building and Belle Suite is on the 3rd floor from memory (there is an elevator). Happy travels

We just returned as well, stayed at Hotel Lancelot near the Colosseum - it was central for us, very near Palatine Hill, Colosseum, San Clemente church. We walked to many other areas as well, and sometimes took taxis. Depends what "reasonably priced" means to you. The hotel's website does not do them justice, it was by far the nicest hotel in our 4-city, 2 week stay in Italy. The staff were always friendly, helpful, and it was fun to meet other guests staying there. I highly recommend it. (again, depends what price range you are looking at; if you go, ask for a room with a terrace).

We stayed at the Hotel Barberini, a good central location. We walked everywhere, even to the Vatican, which we had been told we would need a taxi from that location but it wasn't a bad walk. We were very close to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.
