Context Rome

We recently signed up for a private tour with Context Rome, an orientation tour. Two “learning guides” followed our tour and the tour was more about training them rather than giving us a tour. We were very disappointed.

Worse still, we learned that the guide was not authorized to give tours in Rome, just a student visiting the city. We were not very impressed and we wouldn't take another tour with this company.

1. Re: Context Rome

I have posted elsewhere about Context Rome, as I recently did three tours with them, which were absolutely marvellous. Apparently you have to be Italian to be a "registered" tour guide, and they brought one along for our Ancient Rome tour which got us through the lines quickly, but our Context guides for all three tours, one of whom actually was a "registered tour guide", were first class. I am sorry you felt neglected during your tour, but I have to say this was certainly not my experience. I cannot recommend Context Rome more highly. They brought Ancient Rome to life for me, what more can I say?

I just returned from Christmas in Rome and took a fantastic tour of the Vatican and St. Peter's through Context Rome with Sara Magister as our guide. I enjoy tours, although I am an art historian and already know about it. I enjoy taking a break and allowing someone else to inform my friends and family about the art. It is my vacation, too, after all. :)

Sara did a fantastic job. The information shared was detailed, as though I was listening to a scholar chat, mixing history, art and some interesting personal observations and scholarship. Sara tailored the tour to those items with which our 6 group members expressed interest, so the tour did not feel canned or scripted. What a wonderful experience.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your Context tour. We had a very good experience with them and it was actually one of the highlights of our last trip. Our guide (can't remember her name right now) was very knowledgeable, professional as well as personable and actually spent an extra hour with us. Perhaps they should have informed you prior to your tour that training would be involved and given you the option to reschedule or opt out.

I have taken tours with Context Rome on two different visits to Rome and cannot rate them highly enough. Compared with other tours I have taken, the guides are extremely knowledgeable and are able to communicate both their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the sights we were seeing.

I'm sorry for your experience, but I also think it must be very atypical.

JonnyAd,

Sorry your experience was so bad. I'm surprised though as context docents are all highly trained scholars and specialist. That is was makes Context so different from other groups.

My husband, mother and I were in Rome Christmas through New Years. We booked three Context Rome tours upon the suggestion of friends and we were not disappointed. Our docents were fantastic and made our trip a spectacular event not just another trip. Their expertise and in depth knowledge helped us to understand Rome and brought into context, so to speak, the life of emperors, popes and every day Romans. We loved Context group tours are small. We felt like we were given the "Royal" treatment on each tour. It was a truly memorable experience, one that we hope to cherish again.
