Appian Way - closed to traffic

I read that the Appian way is closed to traffic on Sundays. We will be arriving in Rome on a Sunday afternoon. But we wonder if that is too late to see the Appian Way without car traffic.

Does anyone happen to know what hours it is traffic-free on Sundays? Thanks much.

Here is a link to a very useful website which gives a lot of details about the Appian Way. There is a "contact us" section, so if you can't find your answer in the site, you can email them.

Just to remark that there is not a big difference between the appian way withut traffic and the appian way without traffic

in the appian way there is never traffic as is not really confortable with cars so noone go there if has the chance to go somewhere else ...

so ... come to visit the appian way on sun BUT come to see the appian way every day

ciao

We did walk the Appian Way two summers ago and there was no traffic. The road is less cobblestone and more large stone so it is not comfortable, I am sure by car. We had a lovely day walking this road. Keep in mind that there are not many places to stop and purchase drinks and snacks so take a backpack with water bottles etc. There is a cafe with some salads and sandwiches and some much needed shade that we stopped at. We went in August and it was hot, hot, hot!

Yes, pack a picnic when you go. It's a fun hike with the remnants of tombs and structures along the way. There are estate homes on Via Appia Antica so there is occasionally a car on the road but, as has been described, the condition of the road doesn't allow for very fast driving. On weekdays there will be an occasional tour bus.

It can be fun to pair a picnic on Via Appia Antica with a trip to the nearby Catacombs of St. Callixtus as well.

Here's a little something to whet your appetite!

There is some traffic even on Sunday. Bus 118 and bus 218 run on the Appian way (or near it) even on Sunday

The problem with the Appian way is the stretch between the Porta Sebastiano and the tomb of St Cecilia. There is not a lot of shoulder to the road.

I guess that it depends on what section of the Appian way you are walking on, but we eat the restaurants on the Appian way. We carry water with us.

We hiked out from the centro storico back in '98 but I don't recommend it because the traffic on Via di Porta San Sebastiano is dense, fast and there's little area to walk.

I suggest taking the bus to San Callisto and walk out from there. In 2000 we hiked out to Via di Casal Rotondo, it's a good hike but a lot of fun if you like like that sort of thing.
