I'm going to see it just for the scenery. Even if it is awful, it was filmed in Rome and that counts for a lot. LOL.
I am going to see it tonight.
From the trailer I can see that Tom Hanks is a lot closer to St Teresa in Estacy in Santa Maria Vittoria than any tourist is allowed to get. It was hard to see the details on the stature when I was there, and I think there was a significant distance to the ground. I remember because you can see Blessed ludovica which is a similar statue also by Bernini much better in San Franceso Ripa in trastevere.
Lupaling, yes it does get very close to the statue, Also get a glimpse of Caravaggios Crucifiction of St Peter close up, I watched n interview with Tom Hanks last weekand he said they used the police station opposite Santa Maria del Popolo, not the actual church.... it had me wondering if these were the originals or copies as I don't think any filming was allowed in the churches, I may be wrong though.
I doubt that Tom Hsnks got anywhere near the statue of St. Teresa. The Vatican and the Diocese of Rome did not give permission for any filming to be done in any church in Rome. They probably used blue-screen techniques and faked it.
of course everything is green-screen but, as with any movie, the best way to enjoy is to suspend disbelief.
We just returned from seeing the movie, and, truthfully were somewhat disappointed. Not that it was bad, but I guess our expectations were too high. Some reviews said it was almost like a travelogue, but I didn't think that was the case. Still worth seeing though.
I just got back and thought it was great.
They must have used blue screen for the scenes inside St Peter's because it looked exactly like I remembered it and it would be too expensive for replicas that good.
Fountain of the four Rivers is in Piazza Navona. I wonder if the City of Rome allowed filming there or if that was a replica also?
Blue screen? Green screen? It's all faked, no matter what color the screen.
The City of Rome did allow filming, but since the scaffolding was only removed from the Fountain of the Four Rivers this year and the movie was made last year, one has to conclude it was faked as well.
Did not like the movie but it's great to see the places that I visited and saw in Rome.
The film reviewer in the Wall Street Journal (whom I respect) gave it a B. That said might as well wait until it comes out on DVD.
