Day trips from Rome in the winter

Hi,

We will be in Rome for 5 days during the new years week. We are a family with two kids (3.5 and 7)

Assuming that weather will be nice and that we would like to go out of Rome, where you would reccomend of going for one day?

If we are going would it be better to rent a car for the day or to take the train?

Thanks

Take the Lido train to Ostia Antica. It is onjly 30 min forn the Rome Piramide Metro stop.

There is a cafetereia inside the ruins near the Msuem where you can eat. it's not bad.

Orvieto is also a good choice. It's a medieval hill town, easily reached by train. There is a funicular car to take you up to the town, which should please the children. The well of St. Patrick is also very interesting, with a double helix staircase (one for down and one for up); mules used to use this to transport the water up to the town. There is a beautiful Italian gothic duomo, and an underground Orvieto tour, through the passageways and storerooms carved in the soft tufa rock below the city. If your little one is up for the walking, it should at least be very interesting for the 7-year-old. There are also great views, medieval streets, and good restaurants.

I agree that Ostia Antica and Orvieto are excellent ideas. Anyway it is no use renting a car: you can reach Ostia Antica by train (the line Roma-Lido) with an urban transport ticket, Orvieto by regional train, from Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina.

However, think also that 5 days are not too many to visit Rome. In the winter the weather may be not nice, and the sun goes down early: in my opinion it could be not the best situation for day trips. It is sure that in Rome you won't get bored!
