Second class is fine and you will have an assigned seat.

First class, in my opinion, is not worth the extra 18 euro.

Trenitalia's website will give you the info you need re: cost, times of train and length of travel time - no reason, as said above, to pay the difference between first and second class.

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html but it is unlikely you will be able to book through this site, as it seldom accepts cards issued outside Europe. If you have problems, just buy the train tickets in Italy.

Etravel just returned from Roma today and we took the train to Florence. Buy your ticket when you arrive since the experts are correct US credit cards do not work therefore you cannot get the discount fare. FYI when we took our trip to Florence this past Tuesday I bought the ticket the night before so all I needed the morning of our trip was to find the Biniaro- platform. It adds less stress if you have the tickets in advance besides you don't know how long the line can be the day of.
