We are 2 couples traveling from Venice to Florence to Rome. Trying to decide if we should take trains or rent a car. From Florence, we do intend to go to Lucca and Pisa for 1 day and maybe stop in Sienna on our way to Rome (if rent a car)
I checked prices and the car rental is a bit more (plus the hassle of parking in Florence). But we'd have the option of traveling at our pace and not stuck to a train or bus schedule.
I read numerous posts about train travel and am a bit concerned about 4 people w/ luggage, dragging it up the steps to the train, finding a place to store it so we can see that no one takes it, etc.
We will pack as light as possible, but my hubbie has a biz trip the wk before elsewhere in Europe. So we'll be dragging his suitcase full of suits around for the next 2 wks in Italy! We'll have to squeeze 2 weeks of casual clothes for 2 people in another suitcase. There's no way we'll be able to fit into a single 22" rollaboard for those clothes. I'm hoping to be able to get it all into my 26".
None of us has ever driven in Italy but we have visited other countries and driven w/ crazy drivers on tiny roads.
If money is no object, which would you do? Car or train travel?
