Tavola Calda

Can anyone recommend good inexpensive Tavole Calde cafes in the Prati / Piazza Risorgimento / Borgo areas of Rome for someone on a budget. I have bad experiences in past visits to Rome of expensive tourist ripoff restaurants .

There are indeed expensive tourist rip-off restaurants in the area, many of them clustered on Borgo Pio. But there are also a few quite good and reasonable restaurants around, including the one at the corner of Borgo Pio and Vicolo delle Palline, where Cardinal Ratzinger is said to have sometimes eaten before he became pope.

Il Delfino on Corso Vittorio Emanuele near Largo Torre Argentina is a large tavola calda.

There is a branch of L'Insalata Ricca in Piazza Risorgimento on the corner of Via Vespasiano. Whilst it is from a chain of restaurants, the food is extremely good and inexpensive.

La Pancia Felice (the Happy Tummy) in Borgo Pio is a good trattoria and not overpriced.

Exactly how do you select your food and pay for it at a tavola calda?

A tavola calda is a bit like a cafeteria, but there is usually a rather limited selection. In any case, you point to what you want, and you pay at the register. Sometimes they bring it to your table.

There is a very good tavola calda everyday for lunch (including weekends) in the bar "Antonini", at Lungotevere dei Mellini 1, which is on the corner of Vittorio Colonna, right at the Prati side of the Ponte Cavour.

I've been planning my upcoming trip to Venice,Florence and Rome and will be staying near Cipro. I google around and came across a particular gourmet store that sells great takeout food as well as cheeses and deli meats in the Vatican area. Its called Franchi and is on Via Cola di Rienzo 200. Hope it's as good as it looks!
