I am looking to go to Rome in 2012, and need some advice on any hotels that are cheap, clean, quiet but friendly in Rome that is close to city & attraction, and is in a safe area. All feedback appreciated

Hi,

We stayed at hotel raffaello last year. It was 3 star and is well regarded on TA. it was in a good area about 500 metres from the termini station.

Check venere.com for the area and prices you wish. I have never found an unsafe and dirty hotel in Rome.

If you'd consider a 1 Star take a look at Hotel Azzurra which is in an excellent location near the Trevi Fountain.

We like Hotel Portoghesi just north of Piazza Navona. Great location for walking to most popular sites and good reasonable restaurants nearby.

Star rating in Italy is an indication of amenities and not quality. If you just go by star rating you could stay in a bad hotel with a restaurant and 24 hour front desk instead of staying in a nicer hotel without those amenities. Try venere.com for hotels. The reviews are written by people who have actually completed a stay so they can be trusted.
