2 week vacation--help!!

We are leaving from Toronto this saturday..Sept 10th..and flying into rome.

The monday we are taking a 5 day escorted tour covering areas like venice, florence etc.

I have no idea what my husband and I should wear for clothing and shoes.

Can someone please help me!! I am now finally starting to panic..get nervous...it is so close and I am not ready.

Thank you so much!!

It's still pretty warm here, so pack things for summer weather but with light layers to put over them for cool nights and mornings, like sweaters or light jackets. And as usual a change of things like shoes in case you get caught in the rain one day. Shoe-wise wear shoes that you are comfortable walking a lot in.

Make sure you're dressed appropriately for churches and the Vatican. That means for women: no bare shoulders, short shorts, and short skirts.

Men: no bare shoulders and no short shorts.

If you're wearing a low cut shirt and/or tank top then bring a light button-down shirt, cardigan, or wrap. I suggest a light wrap as you can also transform it into a long skirt.

The Vatican requires that shoulders and knees be covered. Best to wear trousers or jeans and a modest tshirt or even long sleeves if you're not sure. This is appropriate dress for other churches and religious sights, too.

Probably a good idea to dress in layers, too, as the weather is sure to be getting cooler.

Thank you..I did read up and everywhere it told me that I was to not wear short skirts, had to have some sleeve and no low cut tops. I know that this was true many many years ago, but thought that it may have stopped..thanks so much for confirming that the code is still in effect

Hi Roseanne!

Oh yea...they're still very strict about the dress code! I watched a family with two teenage girls get stopped while they were in line to enter the Basilica. They ended up wrapping jackets/cardigans around the girls' waists into a makeshift skirt. I also saw vendors across the street from Piazza San Pietro selling sarongs.

I also remember walking into a church and I was listening to a podcast about Rome. The attendant at the church gave me a dirty look and told me to remove the earbuds and turn off my iPod.

I have definitely packed well..actually going to pack in the morning..but have everything layed out on the spare bed. With all the info I have recieved it should be smooth sailing getting in to the churches. I hope I will be the one with those stories and not the other way around. We leave tomorrow..thanks to everyone for all the helpful tips..have a great weekend!!
