day trips from Rome

We will be coming off a cruise in Civitavecchia, would like to see something wonderful close by for a couple of days, have 2 days before flying home. What do you suggest and how to get there! Have seen sights in Rome.

You're asking for something near Roma, not Roma itself, right? Well, just to name one, a trip to Viterbo would be nice, it's a small place full of history and of beautiful sights. Here you can see some photos, on the official site of the town: …viterbo.it/viterbodigitale/index.php/Immagi… You can easily reach it by train from Roma of from Civitavecchia.

The Posta Vecchia is a wonderful hotel on the water, between Civitavecchia and the Rome airport. It's a former Getty villa, with a small museum and ancient Roman excavations within the property. We stayed there last year, and drove to the nearby Etruscan ruins. There are also some wonderful Renaissance villas and gardens that are not too far by car, including the Villa Lante in Viterbo, the Palazzo Farnese (Caprarola), and the extraordinary gardens of Bomarzo. If you want to go into Rome, the Posta Vecchia also provides transportation into the city.

Does 2 days mean 1 night? Then back to FCO for your flight home. How early is your flight? Orvieto is one hour by direct train from Rome...it is a large town and is interesting, quaint, and scenic enough for 2 days of fun, relaxation, and exploration. Check it out.

I assume you want a trip from Civitavecchia, not from Rome, and that you'll be using public transportation. Two possibilities come to mind: Bracciano, a castle town on Lake Bracciano; and Tarquinia, a hill town with some of Italy's most impressive Etruscan ruins, and a top-notch museum of the Etruscan civilization. Both can be reached easily by bus from Civitavecchia. I suggest you pick one or the other and spend two days there. However, if you're flying home in the morning, you should stay in Rome the night before the flight.

I forgot to put this link in the previous post, and edit isn't working.

cotralspa.it/PDF_Orari_Comune/Civitavecchia.…

It's difficult to decipher, but it shows all the places you can get to from Civitavecchia by bus. It's organized by bus stop in Civitavecchia, and then there are destinations by group. The notes show the intermediate stops. Monday-Saturday schedules are on the peach-colored background, and the Sunday and holiday schedules on the acqua background.
