Looking For Lace Yarn

I have a friend who knits. She is excited that we are going to Italy because she says that there is a special type of yarn which is made only in Italy. It is a very fine yarn, about the same size as the lead in a pencil. She calls it Lace Yarn, and says it takes about 500 feet to make a scarf.

I would like to take some of this back to her, but I do not want to spend much time trying to search for something elusive. Does anyone know where to purchase this, or what type of store I might find it in? Is there a particular area in Rome where I would be more likely to find this yarn?

Thank you Patara for looking out for my questions. It is extraordinary for you to make such efforts on my behalf, and I do appreciate your efforts in researching my needs with your local sources.
