Rome and skiing and christmas

Want to go to Rome for a few days at Christmas and then ski somewhere accessible by train. Suggestions on where to ski... we tend to enjoy the smaller, local ski areas ... but we don't speak italian. What about into Rome, skiing somewhere ? and flying out of another location... Venice? Geneva?

i have no ideas... open to suggestions

thanks

You would have to go all the way to the Alps. The choice is huge. Venice is not going to be close to any good skiing, but you could go back down to Venice, because it's Venice. Whatever you decide go for high elevation, as at Christmas time some locations are not covered well enough yet. Some years are better some are worst. Trentino is my favourite Italian Alps area. If you ment Geneva, Switzerland that would be too far from Rome by train. If you ment Genova (Italy) again no good skiing nearby. Plan on flying out of Milan or Torino.

You don't have to go to the alps, esp. if you prefer small & local. Go to campo felice and nearby ski areas in the Abruzzo, just a 1,5 hr drive out of Rome.

The chance for good snow at Christmas time in the area closer to Rome is not high enough to plan around it. Also the question is, how much of an expert skier are you? Keep in mind that the quality of slopes in the area near Rome is on a much easier level. To get to higher level skiing and better chance for good coverage, you would have to at least reach the Abetone near Firenze. But, again, you could only make last miunutes plans as there may not be enough snow (and this may not be ideal if you have to plan a return flight). Also none of the Appennini locations can be reached by train. Look for Marilleva, Pila, Bardonecchia, Ortisei, Santa Cristina, Selva di Val Gardena.
