Pompeii and Naples

Hiya

My fiancé and I are off to Rome on Friday and are spending my birthday there on the Monday. As we are doing the Vatican on Saturday and the colosseum etc on Sunday, we were thinking about going to Naples or possible Pompeii for my birthday.

We found a shuttle via a tour company without a tour and was wondering if it was easy enough to explore Pompeii on our own without a guide?

Failing that, does anyone have any other ideas of something we could do?

Thanks in advc

Yes, you can explore Pompeii without a guide. And there are lots of other options as well, hard to narrow it down without knowing what you're most interested in, what else you're doing on this trip, etc. (e.g. day trip to Florence, or lots of other things in Rome to see.)

Don't know anything about the shuttle to Pompeii you found, but an alternative is to take the fast train from Rome to Naples, walk next door and catch the local CIrcumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi, which drops you just outside the entrance to the ruins.

It's an easy enough journey to make on your own - but have a look towards the end of the "Top Questions" list here (top right of the page!) if you'd prefer some rather more detailed advice?

At the site you can either join one of the impromptu groups the registered guides assemble for whichever language they specialise in (up to about a dozen people, paying some 12-15 Euro each for a tour that lasts about 90 minutes, I think!) - or hire audioguides for €6.50 (€11.50 for two), although you'll need a passport, driving licence or similar to surrender as a 'hostage' for their return!

Details only in Italian, but they've machines with English....

You should get a map with your tickets, and we always managed with just that and a decent guidebook - though who knows what we may have missed?

Can I suggest you read through the opening message in this.... "Making the most of your visit to Pompeii" - from a TA member, but posted over on a sister site:

messages.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php…

Note particularly the 11 AM and noon visits mentioned in (9) - Saturdays and Sundays only!

For a little more about those places, in Italian but at least with some pictures in the second, see:

And, from two Geminis here to another.... Happy Birthday - hope it goes well!
