how much time to spend......

we are in the early planning stages of a trip next year. how much time is a good amount to spend in rome? is 4 days good, or would we have to cut too much out? probably just going to hit the major sites, but would like to have some 'wandering around' time too.

I think 4 days is the bare minimum you can spend in Rome, you wil be able to just hit the top 10 sites . To do it justice and really get the feel for it you would need at least a week.

I agree, at least 4 days to properly see everything. Just be sure to group everything by regions to save on time. For example, don't plan to visit the Colosseo in the morning and the Vatican in the afternoon....try to minimize transportation time and stick with one area at a time and explore it properly. One example would be the Vatican area: Vatican Museums, St Peter's Basilica, Castel San't Angelo...maybe a stroll along the Tiber to Trastevere for dinner if you're still up for it :) Have fun!!

4 full days - and that means 5 nights, not 3 - is bare-bones minimum to at least scratch the surface of the Eternal City. Every day more is a plus. To see 'everything' in Rome you'd need several months, if not years.
