How much will a taxi cost? just wondering if taking a bus will be tough if we have 2 small suitcases. Any place you suggest for lunch near PN while we wait for our checkin?

Depending on your travel times ... if you come in during peak hour do not even attempt to get on a bus with a suitcase.

You should find that €10 will cover the fare....

We usually go a little further - into the Campo de' Fiori - and to date have rarely exceed [ed - exceeded] that by much!

If able to be precise with the addresses, this site is usually quite accurate:

http://www.worldtaximeter.com/rome

For example:

From: stazione termini

To: piazza navona

At: 11:30

Weekdays, €9.42

With two small suitcases, I wouldn't hesitate to take the bus. The number 64 bus goes there. The number 40 bus also goes there, but it's an express bus that makes fewer stops.

In crowded buses, you should always keep a very close eye on your belongings, and don't carry anything valuable in pockets or other places that stray hands can slip into. If you have a backpack or purse, keep it in front of you, with your arm clamped firmly over the opening.

Before riding either the 64, or the 40, do read some of these:

As this, from more than a decade ago, suggests - it could well be "One of Italy's most expensive bus rides"

I don't think any other crowded buses or the metro are any safer. I think dire warnings about the number 64 bus make people feel as if that particular bus is to be avoided altogether and that they can relax everywhere else.

There is lots of good advice in the links offered by Peter; they're worth reading, but don't think you have to be vigilant only in certain places. I recently read that the riskiest places for pickpocketing are in the metro stations in the very center of the city: Repubblica, Cavour, and Termini.

I ride the number 64 and the number 40 frequently, and have never experienced or witnessed an incident. However, I stay away from the doors and keep an eagle eye on my surroundings and my possessions well under my control. I do this on every crowded bus or metro car.

The taxi fare structure has just changed in Rome. Short journeys cost around same as before (10-15 euros for a crosstown ride) but long journeys are now more expensive.

A taxi from termini to Navona will now cost around 15 euros, as there is also an extra 2 euro on the fee for starting journey at the station (don't try tounderstand the system, it couldn't be more obscure).

I agree with other posters that a bus with kids and luggage is lunacy!

Also be aware that there are no fixed fares downtown, so make sure drivervputs thecmeter on! (the only fixed fare is now to airport 48 euro to FCO)

You say you're in Rome, Italy, and may know better than I - but wasn't the Termini surcharge dropped in the final negotiations that led to the new rates?

Certainly not shown in this (English version on page 2), from the Comune:

http://www.comune.roma.it/PCR/resources/cms/documents/tariffario_taxi_luglio_2012.pdf

Using WTM's estimate of times and distances...

http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/146150595

... but at those new rates:

Daytime pickup: €3

Travel: say 5 km @ 1.10/km = €5.50

Waiting time: 5 mins @ €27/hr = €2.25

Total.... € 10.75 or so?

We'll be testing it for ourselves in a few weeks!

We just took the taxi a few hours ago and the fare was 22.80€!! I was following the map to make sure he wasn't going in a runaround route or something too. It was much more than I thought it would be.

We've been doing the journey I mentioned in reply #3 since 2003, and have never paid that much - even when going the "long way" around a major demonstration.

Unless there were huge delays for the traffic, you were rooked!
