I've seen recently where folks have been paying pretty exorbitant fares to Rome. I get fare sale notices from a few travel sites and just got this notice about an Air France pre-sale. The Air France sale is from their US cities to Paris, connecting to 60 other European cities for $60 more. I priced a trip from Chicago to Rome in November 2006 and got a fare of $700 per passenger, including taxes & 9/11 fee. It would have been about $100 cheaper flying out of the northeast. We will probably not be going this Fall (electing to pay college tuition instead), but I hope this info helps some of you.
One thing nice is you see the exact fares for the different dates around the specific dates you picked. I noticed the fares right before and after Thanksgiving were 2 to 3 times higher, but by moving a day or two you could get significant savings.
