Easter Treats

I will be in Rome in the week before Easter, and am wondering what sorts of special treats I should try. Which are your favourite shops that have nice window displays and Easter specialties?

Also, any recommendations for great pastry shops in the Vatican/Borgo Pio area?

If you don't find anything in that area, but happen to be in or near the Campo de' Fiori, here's one place that's usually big on seasonal specialities

You will see large chocolate easter eggs, some beautifully decorated. The grocery stores also have mass produced ones, sometimes with toys or other candies inside (as of last week they were already in our local grocery store). There will also be marzipan lambs and some cakes that are shaped like doves. Enjoy your trip to the Eternal City -- it's a great time to visit!

Chocolate eggs in Italy are usually hollow, with a surprise inside. Another specialty, mentioned by SpanishSteps, is the "colomba", a cake roughly shaped like a dove in flight.

For both items, you'll get the best quality in a good pasticceria artigianale. You can find these things also in supermarkets, but they're industrial products, without much value.

Thanks, everyone!

I'll definitely check out the "colomba" cake, and look for the more artisanal pastry shops.

Peter, great photos, and that chocolate Vespa is fantastic! :-)
