Train or private driver from Civitavecchia to Positano

We are getting off the ship in Civitavecchia and are trying to decide if we should hire a driver to take us directly to Positano or take the train to Rome and get a train to Positano. We are staying in Positano for 5 days and then going back to Rome. It probably is very expensive to hire a driver but don't want to be on the train all day, but we also don't want to spend an outrageous amount.

Any advice is so appreciated

A private driver from Civitavecchia to Positano would cost between €400 and €500.

There are no trains to Positano. To get there by public transport, you take a train from FCO to Rome Termini (the main station), then a fast train to Napoli Centrale. From there, a suburban train takes you to Sorrento where you change to a bus to Positano.

A good compromise might be to take the train to Naples, and organise a driver from there. I believe this drive would cost around €120.

the train and bus combinations will take probably 5-6 hours and cost probably 50-60 euros each; a car would take probably 3-4 hours and cost several hundred euros. Even if 2 hours are worth 200 euros to you, I would rather be on a train than in a car, and the last hour of bus ride is a trip people travel from all over the world to take, just for the views.

Are you prepared and able to deal with your luggage on public transit? In Civitavecchia you may have to climb down a flight of stairs and then up to your track. Then there's the three steps up into the train car and finding a place for your bags. Down again at Termini, followed by a three block walk to the main station tracks from the auxiliary tracks (if you take the regional train, if you take an IC or Frecce you'll come in on the main tracks).

If you continue by train to Naples you've got the luggage handling again at both ends.

If you continue on from there you've got to transfer to the Circumvesuviana line (at least this station has an elevator and escalator). This is more like an above ground subway than a traditional railroad. No assigned seats, no luggage storage area.

At least the bus has a luggage hold underneath.

Would you consider renting a car and driving yourselves?

The best compromise would be to take public transport to Naples and then have a private car service pick you up there (Napoli Centrale) and take you to Positano. This would cost about 110 euros.

That way you'd get the budget effective train travel to Naples and then the convenience and stress-free pickup and drop off in Positano (depending on the location of your hotel and its accessibility).

Our ship docks at 4:00 am September 30th. I assume we'll get off the ship around 9-10 am. We are. Just two people...my husband and myself.

Eileen, if you decide to go even part of the way by train, I'd suggest aiming for one of the reserved seat trains for the Civitavecchia - Rome leg. There's an IC at 10:12, but this only goes to Roma Ostiense. There's a Frecciabiana at 11:07, that might be your best bet. That allows you to have a leisurely last morning aboard ship, disembark, collect your luggage, clear customs, and travel to the train station without rushing.

If you don't mind a slightly slower trip, the 9:19 IC goes all the way from Civitavecchia to Naples - less messing around with luggage.

I agree with Kathy and would take public transportaion to Naples and have a driver pick you up in Naples to Positano.

This is the link for travel from Civitavecchia to Rome.

From Termini the fast train is only 70 minutes to Naples.

Thanks so much for the info and the link. Just trying to decide whether to take the direct slow train from Civitavecchia to Naples or from Civitavecchia to Rome and then fast train to Naples. I don't know the difference in hours between the two choices. Do you?

There is not all that much difference in travel time (3 hours against 2.5 hours), but on the present timetable the only direct trains from Civitavecchia to Naples leave at 09.19 and 17.22. See www.trenitalia.com looking for trains from Civitavecchia to Napoli Centrale.
