Train from Rome to Venice in August

Hi!

We will be traveling from Rome to Venice in early August.

Is it advisable to buy the train ticket in advance? I'm nervous because if our flight is delayed, we would miss the train and be out a lot of money. But I also don't want to get there and there not be any tickets left.

What would you advise?

Thanks so much!

They won't sell out and you are right, if your flight is delayed you lose what you paid. There are many trains a day on the route - you can see the schedule at www.trenitalia.com - use: Roma Termini and Venezia S Lucia as the station names and put a low number, like "6", in the box for the hour to see a full day schedule - just pick any date in early August to see how many trains there are.

Now ther is also another train company operating on the rome (tiburtina or ostiense stations) to venice Santa Lucia (SL) www.italotreno.it/EN/Pages/default.aspx.

with both companies you could also buy a ticket for the last train of the day with a flexible fare that allows you to change it for an early one if you get to the station on time.

If you are arriving at FCO and want to go immediately to Venice, I'd also look into simply flying rather than going into town for a train. You're already at the airport ... from a time standpoint it will be faster to fly, even if you have to wait an hour or two for a flight. From a cost standpoint it could be about even vs. the cost of a same day train ticket.

For perspective, fares right now for August on Alitalia are 48 Euro one way from FCO to VCE.

By contrast to the 48 Euro flight, a last minute base fare by train is 80 Euro.
