EasyJet from London to Venice, Florence or Rome?

We're planning next April to leave from London after our daughter finishes a study abroad program and fly on Easyjet to Venice. Spend a few days there and then train to Florence, few days there and end up in Rome for about 5 days. I thought when I did a quick check this route via plane and train might make the most sense. Easiest for us to fly back from Rome to the Washington DC area so trying to terminate our trip in Rome. I think it makes sense from a train situation for time, distance and looking for about two week max trip. Would love to see more of Italy but would rather keep it to 3 cities to see more in those cities for our two week period vs shorter periods in more places. We'll be back. Anyone with experience who can see where due to travel we should consider something else in Italy? We've spent enough time in London and Paris and now looking to kick off some travel to Italy. Thanks to anyone who's done this that has some tips. I've spent considerable time on the man in seat 61 website which helped us this year with Eurostar info.

Train is the best way to travel Venice-Florence-Rome. For the best prices, book direct with the train operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 4 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. Discounted ticket prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.com using the Italian names for towns. There is also a new operator serving Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Padova, Venice, Naples and Salerno: http://www.italotreno.it/EN

I would focus on the cities you've chosen, with only a few days in each, and not plan day trips. There is so much to do in all of them.

If you want to fit in one other place, Assisi can be reached by direct train from Florence, and you can then go on by direct train to Rome. You should spend at least one night there, partly because there's no really convenient place to leave your luggage while visiting the city.

Aside from its religious associations (with St. Francis of Assisi), Assisi is a lovely Umbrian town. It does get a fair share of tourists, but most of them come on day trips, so spending a night would let you see the town at its best, with lovely views over vineyards and olive groves, and nice walks to take. The two basilicas of St. Francis, the newer one over the older one, contain some of the world's greatest art, especially the frescoes of Giotto in the upper basilica.

A similar possibility would be to spend a night in Orvieto, another Umbrian town between Florence and Rome. There are also several small cities that could be fit between Venice and Florence, such as Verona, or Ferrara. I suggest you read up on these places to see if any really appeal to you. If not, just concentrating on the "big three" is also not a bad idea.

British airways fly from gatwick to venice and from both heathrow/Gatwick to rome.

The only reason I am mentioning this is that they have a sale at the moment and have saved £300 on my trip to rome for august and saved £200 on a trip to venice earlier this year over expedia and travelrepublic sites.
