Rome to Perguia - train details?

I searched but found the relevant posts to be pretty old.

In layman's terms - how do we get from Rome to Perguia via train? Fastest way preferable unless it is significantly more expensive. This is our first leg of our trip and first leg to plan, so just getting feet wet and know next to nothing of Rome or Italy as of yet, so simple is good :)

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.com clicking on the UK flag to change to English and using the Italian names for towns (Roma Termini to Perugia - note spelling!) . There are notes about online booking at www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/ItalyTrain.htm

There is no point in booking these trains in advance over the Internet. They are all slow Regionale trains, which have no seat reservations (so tickets cannot sell out) and no advance purchase discounts.

1. Take a DIRECT Trenitalia train from Roma Termini to Perugia (one NOT requiring a connection in Foligno).

www.trenitalia.it

2. Take the Perugia MINI METRO elevated people mover to the last station at the top of the hill, then walk to the historic district. The MINI METRO station is located at the extreme end of the Perugia Trenitalia train station (beyond the cafe).

There is also direct BUS service from Roma Tiburtina BUS depot (300 meters from the Roma Tiburtina METRO/Train Station) to the Perugia BUS depot. From the Perugia BUS depot, you can reach the top of the hill by taking the underground escalators which bore through the demolished ROCCA PAOLINA. You access these escalators across the street from the bus depot. However, the train is faster than the bus between Rome and Perugia.

Certainly take a direct Regional train if you prefer direct trains.

However the fastest connections (though not much faster, and also more expensive) use Intercity or Frecciabianca trains with reserved seats from Rome to Foligno. With light luggage, and if like me you actually like to change trains because it means a chance to get out and stretch your legs in the open air, you could take one of these.
