Italirail allows reservation but not trenitalia?

Hi,

Itailirail is allowing me to purchase tickets well in advance of the journey but trenitalia has the following message:

"The regional travel solution is not purchasable if the travel solution departure date is after 7 days from current date"

I prefer to pre book through trenitalia because it doesn't charge 3.50e booking fees.

Thank you

You are trying to purchase an electronic ticket for one of the UNRESERVED Trenitalia regionale trains. You cannot do so more than 7 days in advance. Period.

It is usually not a good idea to purchase ELECTRONIC tickets for the UNRESERVED regionale trains. Better to purchase a traditional PAPER ticket once in Italy. ELECTRONIC tickets for the UNRESERVED regionale trains have significant restrictions on use which are not the case for traditional PAPER tickets. Also, you can't take an EARLIER train if you hold an ELECTRONIC ticket for an UNRESERVED regionale train. You can only take a regionale train which departs up to FOUR HOURS AFTER the departure time of the regionale train noted on the receipt for your ELECTRONIC ticket. That means, for example, that you can't take the train on the following day, in case your travel plans change. Once purchased, an ELECTRONIC ticket for the UNRESERVED regionale train is non-refundable (not so for PAPER tickets in many cases).

By contrast, PAPER tickets for the UNRESERVED regionale trains are valid for TWO MONTHS following the issue date, as long as not validated. Once validated, these tickets usually expire after SIX HOURS (there are a few exceptions, not worth mentioning here.)

Nor is there any price incentive to purchase tickets in advance for the UNRESERVED regionale trains. The fare will be the same on the day of travel as on the day you purchase in advance.

Regional tickets bought from Italiarail are valid for two months from the date of purchase. But you cannot print an Italiarail Regional ticket at home, it must be printed out at an appropriate ticket machine in Italy (which many stations do not have) using a PNR number supplied to you by Italiarail.

As printing out your ticket takes the same time or longer than making a cheaper purchase from Trenitalia from a ticket machine, there is no point in buying this type of ticket from Italiarail.

Basically, you can't buy regional train tickets more than a week in advance online. You're better off just buying them at the station the morning of travel. They never sell out but there are no seat reservations.

If you're riding a regional train, make sure you validate your ticket before you get on the train. We never did, and got lucky. A conductor never asked us for a ticket.

I guess if you do get caught, not knowing is not an excuse and it will cost you 25-50 Euros as a fine.
