I am assuming you already know that driving in the historic center in subject to a limited traffic zone (ZTL) restriction and violators can get a hefty fine.

You could park your car in the parking garage underneath the Villa Borghese gardens. The parking lot is sabait.it/en/parking/rome/roma-villa-borghese The parking garage can also be reached by walking through the 'Spagna" metro station. So, the Spanish Steps area would be convenient for accessing your car, and it is a good location -- you can walk to many sights, or take metro or the handy little electric mini bus system -- http://www.atac.roma.it/files/doc.asp?r=9 In addition, there are several convenient taxi stands, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants.

You can't drive in Florence either. Here's a link to familiarize yourself with the ZTL's, dreaded bus lanes and Italian driving laws:

Might want to park it at either of the above and walk your luggage to a hotel room in the Historic area or stay at a hotel in the area around the Villa Borghese (which has convenient and quick access to the Historic area). Then walk or take buses everywhere. Staying too far out of town will mean a lot of bus or train travel into and out of town every day.

One possibility is to stay in the Trastevere area. The ZTL is only active from 6:30 am to 10 am Mon-Sat, and Friday and Saturday nights. We have booked an apartment there for 3 nights in July and will be able to drive to the door to unload, then plan on parking the car in one of the private car parks in the area.

Also, check hotels with free parking.

On a previous visit we have stayed at Crowne Plaza. It is easy to access by car, has a shuttle service into the city and a bus stop outside the door.
