Catacombs

I've read about a number of catacombs in Rome, are there any more worthy of a visit than others?

The ones that are more worth a visit is up to you, some are easier to get to also. Your guidebook and this thread should give you more information to decide.

There are 3 catacombs (St Callistus, Domitilla, and St Sebastian) on the Appian Way. YOu can see all 3 if you go on the right day. I have never been to the Sebastian catacomb because they are closed on Sunday.

I've been to all of the catacombs that are regularly open for visit, to several of them multiple times. Here's a description I wrote up some time ago:

How much time should one plan for visiting one of the catacombs discussed above?

It varies depending on the catacomb and how busy they are. You first have to wait a bit while they try to collect enough people for a tour in your language. If there are not enough people, they usually take off anyway with a small group. There are usually lots of takers for the English language tours. We once had to wait a long time for an Italian language tour at San Sebastiano! The tours themselves take less than an hour.
