Dinner Around Piazza Navona and Pantheon

Hi, we are staying between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon in a couple of weeks. Can you recommend some non-touristy restaurants for authentic cuisine at dinner time in that general area?

I love La Pigna, in Piazza della Pigna.

The words "authentic" and "piazza Navona" (or "Pantheon") don't go exactly hand in hand... you'd better check out the rest of the city centre, these areas have the highest concentrations of touristy stuff!

A lot of good restaurants in the area but don't expect to find them all tourist-free; just because there are some tourists doesn't mean they are not good; there are plenty that are clearly designed for tourists solely - i.e., menu boards outside with set meals, photographs on menus, that sort of thing.

It's very busy with tourists in the area - so, it's pretty doubtful you will find some undiscovered fabulous spot to eat with no tourists - given that you are one yourself.

I would suggest staying away from eating right on a piazza like Navona or the Pantheon - food is usually higher priced and not all that great - they know they can easily attract clientele just by location.

One of my happiest memories is a dinner I had with my then 80 year old mother at one of the tourist restaurants on the square in front of the Pantheon. The food was adequate, but the view of that magnificent building as dusk turned to night and we toasted each other under the stars was worth every penny. It was magic. My mother is long dead, but my memories of the great times we had in Florence and Rome on her only international trip are still warm and present. I can get very good Italian food in Chicago -- but I can't eat it on the plaza in front of the Pantheon.

I love Il Chianti. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Piazza della Rotunda. (It is very close to the Trevi Fountain.) The food is terrific. Indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations a must spring-fall. http://www.vineriailchianti.com/

Janettravels, Thank you for reminding me that a perfect meal/evening is NOT just about the food. You are so right, the Pantheon is only in Rome....so we are gunna enjoy a meal with it in view. And just maybe the food will be decent too. ...but who cares if it's not. Not me! :)

Petermaravich: Completely agree with the above, but you'll need more than one option since you will be there for awhile. One (without the Pantheon view) for your consideration is Capranica www.enotecacapranica.com

Let me point out that in Italy most of the mediocre food is better that the Italian food that we get in the US! And as Janet pointed out, life is all about experiences and relationships. When it comes right down to it...that's all we take with us out of this world. Le dolce vita!
