Hotel in Rome during August

We are travelling to Rome for 5 nights in August. I would be grateful for a hotel recommendation.

Criteria: cost not the determining criteria but not over the top, central or around Piazza Navona, Trevi, not old and dingey, must have a bar, so that we can have a drink after walking all day and before going out to dinner, handy to good restaurants, not on a main road or noisy...suggestions please?

How many of you will there be, and how much do you want to spend per night, in euros?

These sites allow you to look by location, price and amenities: www.booking.com and www.venere.com - read the reviews!!! The star system is different in Italy, i.e. a star for having an elevator or a so so restaurant on premises. The 2 sites I mention only allow reviews by persons that have completed stays (unlike T.A.).

Type - rooftop bars - in the search bar, there was a thread not long ago naming quite a few.

You really do need to provide an actual idea of your budget so people can offer useful recommendations - for example, right near Piazza Navona, there is the Hotel Raphael (with bar) - whether it is in our budget range or not is unknown.

For that very hot time of year, I would not actually want an outdoor bar - indoor ones probably a better choice so you don't swelter.

But - again, a budget is needed.

Thanks. Not over 900 euros per night and not under 400. Also, I don't want a hotel that could be anywhere in the world. if anyone has been to Vietnam, I mean the difference between the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi and the Sheraton in Ho Chi Minh City. The latter could fit into any urban area in the world, casino and all. The metropole is fabulous.

No idea what their rates are but they are at top of Spanish Steps and they do have bar, restaurant, etc

And, again, if you haven't yet looked - the Hotel Raphael may be suitable given its proximity to Piazza Navona.

Just came back from staying three nights at the Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere. It was perfect. Small hotel set around a courtyard full of orange and lemon trees. Spotlessly clean, comfortable, quiet and all the staff are first class. It was an easy walk to all the main sites but they can get you a cab in minutes if you prefer not to walk. They have a bar and offer free canapés with drinks around 5.30 each evening for a couple hours. Perfect after a long day sightseeing. Lots of very good restaurants in the area too. Check it out on TA.
