Best way to see Rome for first timers?

Hello all,

Me and my GF are visiting Rome in September for our first time. We're staying 5 days/4 nights (from Sunday to Thursday).

We were just wondering what was the best way to see Rome for first timers? Would it be to explore by ourselves, or is it best to go on tours etc?

Things we'd like to see include: Vatican City & Sistine Chapel, Colusseum, St Peters square, Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant Angelo, Pantheon, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps.

Are there other sites that people recommend we see? Do you feel we have enough time to be able to see what we'd like to?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you

I would suggest visiting on your own with a good map and guide book. Rome is easy to navigate and the sites you mention are all close to each other. The only site that I would recommend a tour for would be for the forum, but you can book that onsite.

I agree but would definitely book entry tickets online for the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum to avoid waiting in long lines:

Your guidebook will have many other sites than the most popular ones you have named - and you do have time to add a few others.
